The storm of the decade went through our area nearly three weeks ago.
We had no power and had to sit in the house without lights or air conditioning.
My husband suggested we go to a hotel, but there were none in the area that wasn’t affected by the power outage. We didn’t want to get too far from the house, because we wanted to know when the power came back on. During the day, it wasn’t too bad. We had the generator to keep the well pump running, and the refrigerator running. At night, we shut everything off to conserve on the gas we used for the generator. Without air conditioning, even the candles made it warmer in the house. I couldn’t believe we minded the heat in the house more at night than we did in the daytime. We couldn’t sleep without the blankets because we had the windows open for a breeze, and the mosquitoes were a nuisance. If we pulled the cover up, we sweat through the sheet and couldn’t sleep. Any way you looked at it, sleeping was nearly impossible without air conditioning. We slept whenever we could, which was very little, and waited for the power to come back on so we could have air conditioning. It took almost two weeks before we got any good news about the power. When they finally turned it on, we noticed there was mold and mildew on our walls. After getting the air conditioning running again, we started scrubbing the walls and ceilings and getting our lives back to normal.
