I have been getting very busy at my job, and have not had as much free time to do my volunteer work at the orphanage.
I used to go every week, sometimes twice a week, but now I’m lucky to spend one or two days a month there with the kids.
I had an idea that I ran by the clergy at the orphanage, about coming by on the second saturday of every month and teaching some basic classes to the kids about what I did for a living. It may not be glamorous or fancy, but being an HVAC technician is a great way to put food on the table without spending a small fortune on your education. Every class I hold we start by going over what I call the basic anatomy of a piece of HVAC equipment. I started with furnaces, because a furnace is a much simpler machine to work on, and it’s a good place to get started. We moved on to air filters and ductwork in the next few classes, learning each part of the system one at a time. Finally we got to air conditioners, which are so much more complex than anything else in this business. Along the way they are learning the basic science used for ventilation and air exchange, as well as getting comfortable working on machines with their hands. I don’t really care if any of them get into HVAC work or not, as long as they get some sort of skills or experience from the classes I am offering.
