When my husband and I bought our house, I deliberately found a house that had a bad HVAC system. I knew that I wanted to put my own heating system into the house and I wouldn’t be able to justify tearing out a perfectly good HVAC system. When the inspector told us we needed to have the furnace replaced, I was thrilled. I remember growing up in a house that always had cold floors. It didn’t matter what dad did to the furnace, our floors were always cold. There wasn’t a basement in the house, so we didn’t have the heat coming off the furnace, to warm the floors. We would get out of bed in the middle of the night and run to the bathroom. I wanted to be able to get out of bed in the middle of the night, and slowly walk to the bathroom. The only way I could do this was if I had radiant heat in the house. My husband was afraid it was going to be too expensive to install a new furnace and to install radiant heating, but I had done my homework. Radiant heat didn’t involve much more than having baseboard heaters that would push the heat across the floor. Air vents only pushed the air up and by the time it got back to the floor, it was already cool. With baseboard heaters, the heat would gently flow across the floor, heating it before it heated the air. The air would be heated as the heat radiated off the flooring. He never thought of radiant heat as being so simple.
