I used to think my Grandmother was a very savvy person when it came to saving money. Over the last couple of months, I have found out that her saving money was actually just a way to make sure she had enough money to survive. We were used to going to her house and never having name brand cookies or soda. That was who Gran was and what she bought. She said she was brought up on these brands and we never questioned her. She had some questionable looking food on her table, but it was palatable and we never complained because we didn’t want to hurt her feelings. I went to Gran’s house one afternoon and I noticed that it was a bit stuffy in the house. I knew she had HvAC in the house, so I was kind of concerned about the air conditioning not working properly. I said something to her and she said that she had meant to call the HvAc company but she forgot. When I got home, I said something to my dad about how hot and stuffy it was. He said he would head over to visit her right after supper. When he returned, he had Gran with him. Her house was filled with mold because of lack of air conditioning. He said the AC must have been off for several days. Her temperature was over 100 and she was slightly dehydrated. She told him she couldn’t afford to have the air conditioning repaired and she didn’t want to bother us with her problems.
