We Could Lessen Our Dependence on Oil if we Built Our Homes with Attention to Natural Heating and Cooling

I have never been forced to spend my days in a residence that didn’t have a finally working oil furnace or A/C.

  • In fact, whenever our central A/C or oil furnace had a little glitch, both of us would immediately bring in a Heating as well as Air Conditioning serviceman to drive out to our residence and get to work repairing the heating and cooling.

It is hard for myself and others to even imagine the time and what it was like to live before electricity & modern machinery. However, I get a kick out of studying books, & I wanted to understand how the folks who came before us were able to heat or cool their houses since they didn’t have modern Heating as well as Air Conditioning units. I discovered that the generations before us didn’t have a need for modern A/Cs because the generations before us gave much more thought to the ways in which they built their houses. Typically, their were built partially underground or in the shade of the woods in order to surround themselves with cooler air. By orienting the porch, house, & windows to the South, they would provide a way for there to be cool air in their buildings even without A/C as we know it today. However, they still needed to have heat, however oil oil furnaces were also not yet invented. However, for thousands of years, people simply used fireplaces & wood stoves as heaters for their homes, & that tradition has still carried on into some houses today. Wood-burning Heating as well as Air Conditioning units are available and efficient, & they are cleaner and less expensive to run than the modern oil oil furnaces that we commonly use throughout the country. Both of us should be absolutely careful about thinking these people are primitive for not having A/Cs & oil furnaces. Correct home-building techniques could be instituted again and we could use less heating and cooling that way.
