Finding bees in the air duct

I work out of a small office in an older building.

This past Springtime, when I arrived on a Tuesday morning, I noticed that there were a couple of bees flying around.

One of the men that I work with is terribly allergic. I knew she’d be entirely aggravated if he spotted the bees. It wasn’t straight-forward, even though I managed to catch them and safely release them outside. The next morning, I found many bees in the office again. I couldn’t figure out where they were coming from. The issue with the bees steadily worsened over the next many weeks. It wasn’t until the outside temperature warmed up and we lowered the control device that we located the source of the bees. They had somehow built a nest inside the duct system. When the A/C turned on and all that cold air rushed through the pipes, the bees got entirely angry. A swarm of bees poured into our office. The terrible guy who is allergic started screaming hysterically. We made sure to get everyone out of the office. I shut off the A/C and then called the HVAC company who normally services the unit. When I explained the issue, he said that I’d first need to call a bee relocation company. Many types of bees are absolutely protected and can’t be exterminated. It took some effort to find a licensed bee relocation company in the local area. The process to extract the bees was quite interesting but also time-consuming. Once the bees were safely on their way, we then needed the services of the HVAC company. The bees created a significant mess inside of the ducts. After a complete duct cleaning, we were finally able to operate the A/C and get back to work. By then, our afternoon was nearly over.
