Smelly workout area

Living in the northeastern area of the country, I am accustomed to very unpredictable weather all year round.

  • Our winters are known for sub zero temperatures and a yearly snow accumulation of approximately twelve feet.

Our summer weather doesn’t last all that long but is typically humid, with temperatures in the high eighties. The spring and fall are a mix of freezing rain, hail, high winds, thunderstorms and torrential downpours. The majority of days, we’re trapped indoors and reliant on some type of temperature control. Our heating and cooling costs add up to about 50% of the household energy consumption. Because of this, I’ve gone to great lengths to seal up the house and prevent the heated and cooled air from escaping. While I’ve managed to reduce demands on the furnace and air conditioner, I’ve also prevented natural ventilation. With no outside air to freshen things up, bad smells and pollutants are contained inside and cause problems with indoor air quality. I had a lot of complaints with unpleasant odors and dust in my home gym. The severe weather makes it necessary for me to workout inside most of the time. My level of physical fitness is a priority to me, and I workout every day. My workouts are strenuous, and I am always drenched in sweat by the end of the hour. The smell of sweat became trapped in the room. The excessive amount of dust floating around and settling on surfaces was requiring me to continually clean my exercise equipment. Wiping down a stationary bike, treadmill and dumbbells is aggravating and time-consuming. About six months ago, I had a whole-home air purifier installed. The air purifier works to remove pollutants and smells of the conditioned air. It maintains a cleaner, healthier and fresher smelling environment.
