My daughter is the only female HVAC technician that I know.
When she first started talking about becoming an HVAC technician, I kind of just laughed about it.
I thought that she was just kidding at first because she’s always said that she would go to school to be an interior designer. She even had a couple of different classes that she took online already to go in that direction. Then she read this article about the job market for HVAC technicians and how there just aren’t a lot of women in the field, and that’s what changed her mind. She said that she thought that she would love to be a woman HVAC technician in a field that’s dominated by men. She signed up for the HVAC certification classes at our local technical school here in town, and the rest is history. She did really great in her classwork and in her internship and now she has a job at one of the largest heating and cooling businesses in this part of the state. She says that it’s funny sometimes to go to work because the only other women who work there are in the office setting schedules and making appointments. She’s the only one out there driving around in an HVAC service truck and fixing furnaces and central A/C units all day. I would have to say that I’m proud of the fact that she didn’t let the male dominated industry intimidate her. I think she’s really going to do well in this career choice that she’s made.
