After our twins were born, my husband and I agreed that we needed a bigger house.
We hoped to find a house in a good neighborhood with some surrounding property.
We were looking for an open floor plan with a big kitchen, lots of closets and a two-car garage. Because of our busy lives, we didn’t want to invest in a fixer-upper. We needed everything to be in good shape and ready for us to simply move our stuff in. When we found a house that met all of our criteria, I wasn’t thrilled to find a boiler heating system. Living in the northern area of the country, the heater is an important appliance. We depend on the heating system for more than half the year. It needs to combat temperatures into the negative digits and ungodly windchill. The cost of heating is a big part of the household budget. We had a gas furnace in the previous house, and I was satisfied with the efficiency and comfort level. I imagined that the boiler would be noisy, dirty and a lot of maintenance. I doubted its ability to combat the severe weather. I realized that replacing the boiler with a furnace wasn’t financially feasible. Before putting in an offer on the house, I asked an HVAC contractor to check out the boiler and provide a recommendation. The HVAC professional told us that we were lucky to have a hydronic heating system. He said that boilers provide a more gentle comfort and don’t cause problems with lack of humidity. After moving into the house, I’ve discovered that the boiler operates silently and requires only minimal upkeep. It’s wonderfully energy efficient and easily handles the worst weather. It keeps the house perfectly comfortable, with no unpleasant drafts or temperature swings.
