After having agreed to rent an apartment for a year before even being able to go to see the place, I believe it would be safe to say that I brought the situation that I am entirely upon myself! Last year I was offered a great position working as an intern in a huge city.
This was all wonderful and great, however the only real issue was that it was an unpaid internship! Due to this I needed to find a relatively cheap location to live for a little while.
After searching online for a good amount of time I found a location that seemed rather nice. I didn’t have the money to fly across the country just to do a tour of the location, so I took a major leap of faith and agreed to sign the lease only from looking at the pictures and descriptions online. Upon my arrival however, I suddenly came to find that the residence I had agreed to rent and the one I was in were not the same thing. There were mold spots everywhere on the ceiling, the a/c machine didn’t work, and there were bars on the windows for some strange reason. Soon after my arrival I tried getting hold of the person who had rented the location out to me to see if we could actually do something about the mold or the lack of a/c in the residence, however according to this scam artist none of that was required at all in the contract. Take it from someone who had to learn the rough way and never agree to live in a residence you have never visited, and also be sure to look at the fine print.
