Should have hired a professional for new construction heating and cooling

My husband and I spent several years planning and saving to build a new home.

We bought the ideal piece of property but were unable to start the build until we could afford it.

We spent the time debating every detail of our blueprint and the various features of the home. We researched the best windows, the most innovative appliances, quality of floor tiles and styles of kitchen counters. We should have devoted some attention to the type and layout of the heating and cooling system. Instead, we trusted the general contractor to handle it. While he subcontracted a plumber and an electrician to get these essential systems just right, he took care of the heating and cooling equipment. A general contractor might be proficient in pouring a foundation and framing a house, but he lacked the specialized knowledge of a certified HVAC contractor. We discovered problems with the furnace and air conditioner after we moved into the house. Extremely high utility bills, rooms that were overheated or chilly and noisy operation led us to calling a fully licensed HVAC contractor for assistance. The guy inspected our system and found all kinds of mistakes. The duct system wasn’t designed or installed properly. Sharp bends in the layout restricted airflow and caused a buildup of contaminants. Leaks at the seams were allowing the heated and cooled air to escape. Both the air conditioner and furnace were oversized for the size and demands of our home. Because of this, the system would start up and shut down continually, creating temperature fluctuation. Some of the issues were able to be resolved and others we were forced to live with.
