When I went to school, there wasn’t air conditioning on the school buses.
You put up with the heat, knowing the ride would be short.
Twenty years later, I was driving a school bus. It was the only job I could get that would coincide with my children’s schedule. You could never know how surprised I was when I received a bus that had air conditioning. I didn’t know they had air conditioning on school buses. Even on the hottest of days, I was comfortable. I even bought popsicles for my students. It was great to eat a popsicle and not have it melt before you had it finished. With the air conditioning, the kids and I were comfortable. My kids didn’t want to get off the bus and go into our home. We didn’t have central air conditioning in our home. All we had were a couple window AC units, but they weren’t in the bedrooms. I was soon to find out why I received a bus with air conditioning. The AC wasn’t on every bus, but there were three that were lucky. When I was asked to take a trip to NYC, I was thrilled. I could take my girls with me and I thought it would be fun since they paid us. I even got a spending allowance for our lunch and dinner. Without the air conditioning, there is no way we could have made the trip. Even with it, a sixteen hour trip was long and tiring. I found the AC was to keep the kids from protesting and me from falling asleep.
