When the HVAC technician arrived earlier this year, he told us our furnace wasn’t in very good shape.
He could probably keep it running for this winter, but he didn’t think it would last much longer.
It was barely January, and we could tell the heat was dwindling, and no matter how much we turned up the thermostat, the temperature in the house wouldn’t go above seventy. I was worried about our furnace lasting through the season, and I was sure it wouldn’t last another year. My husband and I had to make plans for what we were going to do. We needed to figure out what type of furnace we needed, or if we wanted to stay with the one we had. We liked the way our furnace worked when we first got it, but that was twenty years ago. I was hesitant about getting another traditional furnace because of the cost of heating fuel. We talked about different heating, but whether it was coal, gas, or electric, it all needed some type of fuel. Electric companies needed some way to create electricity. By March, the heat was barely non-existent, and what made us happy was that we lived in an area where it was warm enough to go without a furnace by April. We would need to use the fireplace at night, but we wouldn’t freeze to death. We made it through winter, but we had to decide in the next six months. The way my husband procrastinates, I knew it was going to take every one of those six months to decide on a new furnace.
