When I first signed up at the fitness center, I knew there was a good chance I was wasting my money. I was extremely intimidated by the gym atmosphere. I’ve never been involved with any type of athletics. I had no idea how to go about getting in shape. Despite having a staff member provide a tour of the facilities and brief tutorial of all of the equipment, I had no confidence. My first day at the gym, I spent an entire hour on the treadmill. I didn’t dare try any of the other equipment. I was embarrassed that I could only manage to walk rather than run. However, I noticed a bunch of people heading into one of the studios within the fitness center. I found out that there are all different types of group fitness classes offered. I was able to sign up for a beginner’s yoga class. It was wonderful. Although I struggled with the basic poses, I wasn’t the only one having difficulty. I liked that yoga class so much that I signed up for every class that accommodated my work schedule. I took a spin, pilates and strength training class. I learned how to properly warm up, stretch and cool down. I gradually improved my flexibility, balance, strength and stamina. Within a few months, I was able to progress to more advanced classes. I added circuit training, HIIT training and a jump rope class. These classes gave me the confidence to venture out into the gym and utilize all of the different amenities. I now run on the indoor track, climb the rock wall, hit the heavy bag and take advantage of all the many types of machines.
