I figured out that approximately 50% of my household energy USAge is due to heating and cooling.
- With the severe weather in my local area, it’s necessary to run either the furnace or the air conditioning system most of the time.
I consistently beginning up the heating system in early October and don’t shut it down until sometime in April; By the end of June, it’s time to switch to air conditioner. Although I’ve invested into top-of-the-line, Energy Star rated heating and cooling components, I knew that there were occasions to trim running costs. I’ve consistently been superb about replacing air filters and setting up professional annual service for each system. I decided I also needed to find ways to reduce the workload of the heating and cooling units. I realized that air was leaking in and out around my windows. The windows were seasoned and not providing optimum efficiency. Although upgrading to thermal pane, low-E windows was rather upscale, I’m hoping that the resulting energy savings will reuse the investment. I also spent a legitimately unpleasant Tuesday in the attic, cutting out seasoned insulation and installing new. I’ve caulked, weatherstripped and installed ceiling fans. I’ve added thermal-lined draperies and spent several hundred dollars on a smart control unit. The costs for these improvements are considerable, and I haven’t noticed all that much difference in my bi-weekly bills. I do know the apartment is more comfortable and there’s less wear and tear on the furnace and air conditioning system. Hopefully the systems will experience fewer malfunctions and last longer. At least I have increased the value of my property.
