I’ve been working as a security officer in an assisted nursing facility for about two years.
I’ve come to grow fond of the residents and have developed several close relationships with a few during my time here. It can sometimes be a bit sad, but most of the days are happy. The unhappiest day wasn’t even related to a resident, but actually because of the air conditioning breaking in the middle of summer. As you can imagine, many residents get sick frequently due to a weakened immune system, so you can imagine how uncomfortable it can get if the air conditioning isn’t working. The residents were quickly heating up, so our maintenance guy came over to try and repair the problem. He checked the air ducts, filters, and purification system, and told us that our air filters were so clogged up from pollen during the Spring season. The facility manager forgot to set up scheduled maintenance to make sure everything stayed clean between seasons. It took about three hours, but the repair was finally done. The manager went ahead and scheduled routine maintenance for the remainder of the year with the technician. Most of the residents were just complaining about the air conditioner breaking the entire time, so the complaining didn’t help during that time. The bright side was that some residents took advantage of the summer heat and swam in the pool. The residents who were sick had fans put in their rooms so they didn’t overheat. I just used a handheld fan to keep me cool in the lobby.
