I visited my mum in winter and could not help notice the cold bouts of air that kept blowing in once in a while.
Upon asking my mum, she was confused that this had been happening for a few weeks now, but she was not alarmed and was waiting for it to go away on its own. Immediately I realized that something was off and that my intervention was required if I was to salvage the situation. It turns out that my mother’s HVAC system had been out of shape for a few months now. She even forgot to have the HVAC technician do the routine annual tuneup that always happened before winter. I always reminded her to get the HVAC professional to come in before summer and winter, but I was too busy to remember it on time this time around. However, the fluctuating weather in the house was alarming to me, and I thought about having the technician come in when I was around. It turns out that my mum’s furnace has a filthy filter. She could not remember when the furnace was changed, and it was responsible for the cold air blowing into the house. The air was not going over the heating panels due to the accumulated dust and debris. The HVAC contractor also noted that the flame sensor in my mum’s furnace was also too dirty not to work properly. We had it cleaned and ready for use. I realized that I would have to be scheduling the annual maintenance myself, especially when mine was being fine-tuned since mum was getting old to remember.
