Don’t want my house to smell

I am really concerned about my house smelling.

  • I have a cat that uses a litter box and I don’t want my house to smell like it.

I plug in wallflowers in all my outlets, have candles burning and clean my house regularly. When I saw that HVAC companies sell scented air filters, I was extremely pumped. They had lavender, rose, lemon and laundry scent. I was so excited that I bought all of them and lots of them. The first month I decided to try lavender and I just hated it. It smelled like an old, dirty flower. It made my house reek to the point where I ripped it out. Rose wasn’t any better. The lemon scent gave me a headache and the laundry scent wasn’t pleasant at all. I ended up giving up on the scented air filters entirely. I thought a scent would be nice. Scented cat litter is amazing. I like a car air freshener. I guess the difference is that the air filter catches dust, hair and debris from getting into the system. All that gross stuff clogs in the air filter and then the scent gets washed over it. The scent mixed with old dust is just not pleasant. My HVAC business recommended that I turn to an air purification system if I really wanted my home to be free of odors. I have looked into them and they are pretty expensive and difficult to install. I think I have the problem basically solved with regular cleanings and scented items. If I start noticing a cat litter smell, I will buy the air purifier though.
