Whenever I buy anything new, pretty much everyone wants to offer me an extended warranty.
I bought a toy for my kid for Christmas, that if it had lasted until the end of the year, I would have been happy.
I got the toy up to the counter and they wanted to sell me an extended warranty on the toy. It came at the cost of almost as much as I was paying for the toy. Even if I had bought the warranty, I would have had to pay to send the toy back, and that would have cost nearly as much as the warranty. My wife and I got an unpleasant taste in our mouth for any kind of warranty after these new offers. When both of us bought our new gas furnace, both of us knew we had a one-year warranty on the gas furnace. It covered parts and service. It was necessary to have some services by the HVAC corporation, or they would nullify the warranty. Of course, the HVAC corporation provided a service agreement at a special price, which both of us felt we had no choice but to buy. When they gave us the total amount, the HVAC tech asked us if both of us wanted the extended warranty. I explained both of us would love to wait and think about it. That was when both of us got an ultimatum. If we didn’t buy the extended warranty for the gas furnace now, it may not be available when both of us were ready. I knew warranties were just a bogus way to get more money. We bought the extended warranty, however only because of our fear of what would happen to the gas furnace in the future.
