Whenever I buy anything new, everyone wants to offer me an extended warranty.
I bought a toy for my kid for Christmas, that if it had lasted until the end of the year, I would have been happy.
I got the toy up to the counter and they wanted to sell me an extended warranty on the toy. It came at the cost of almost as much as I was paying for the toy. Even if I had bought the warranty, I would have had to pay to send the toy back, and that would have cost nearly as much as the warranty. My husband and I got an unpleasant taste in our mouth for any kind of warranty after these new offers. When we bought our new furnace, we knew we had a two-year warranty on the furnace. It covered parts and service. It was necessary to have certain maintenance by the HVAC company, or they would nullify the warranty. Of course, the HVAC company offered a maintenance agreement at a special price, which we felt we had no choice but to buy. When they gave us the total amount, the HVAC tech asked us if we wanted the extended warranty. I explained we would like to wait and think about it. That was when we got an ultimatum. If we didn’t buy the extended warranty for the furnace now, it may not be available when we were ready. I knew warranties were just a bogus way to get more money. We bought the extended warranty, but only because of our fear of what would happen to the furnace in the future.
