I accepted a job at the local hardware store and went through intense training.
When I was hired over 6 months ago, they told me that I’d be working in the HVAC section and I was shocked.
I had no experience with heat and air equipment and I knew next to nothing about it. I was the person who hired an HVAC technician twice per year to service their HVAC system because I couldn’t service it myself. If my HVAC system started acting out of sorts, then I’d call an HVAC technician to fix it for me. It was because of this that I requested to be in a different department, but the store wouldn’t budge. My manager assured me that I’d get the proper training and I did. I spent an entire month studying a binder filled with information about HVAC systems. The binder covered everything including basic furnace and air conditioner parts, how to hire one of our HVAC professionals, air filters, and thermostats. I was instructed to learn as much information as possible because I’d be dealing with customers with a lot of odd heat and air concerns. When I wasn’t working with a customer, I found myself reading the back of packages and studying the differences between the HVAC equipment on the shelves. Now that I’ve been working in the HVAC department for 6 months, I feel like I’ve learned so much information that I could be an HVAC technician myself. I’ve even considered getting my certification.
