I used to be a death-row superintendent, and I must say that the experience has affected me for life. There really is profound psychological damage in this line of work. This is why you must have a tour of duty for 2-3 years because anymore than that could cause much more damage to people. I did this work for 3 years and I have never been the same. The way we must treat these prisoners who have a death sentence, is entirely in-humane. The fact that we know that we have to kill the prisoners is enough to take a toll on anybody, especially if those prisoners are innocent of the crime. There have been numerous cases where the prisoners would be executed and later be exonerated of their crime. This is a very unfortunate thing, and you will have nightmares from going through this type of work. It’s especially horrible if an execution doesn’t go well. I hated that we couldn’t provide these people with more comfortable conditions with advanced air purification systems and decent air conditioning. You would think we could at least give them proper climate control when they already know they are on their way out. Without the necessary climate control, it’s hard to even be comfortable working at all in corrections. It’s nice to get back home and be able to turn up the A/C, but then you can’t help but think about those poor souls who have to suffer all the way up until they are executed. It’s the most horrible thing, and I now strongly oppose the death penalty.
