HVAC savings are greater the tighter your house is

It wasn’t too long ago that I was randomly given a temperature gun. This is one of those handheld devices that show you the temperature of any surface it is pointed at. Of course, I was given this thing as a gag gift. Around the office, I am known to be the one who regulates the temperature by monitoring the HVAC thermostat. Part of my position with our company is to manage all manor of waste whether it be energy or manpower. I am charged with streamlining and maintaining the maximum efficiency of our office. So, I make sure the HVAC temperature is at a conservative but comfortable setting. I don’t acquiesce to the factions that want the office super heated or super cooled. Anyway, I was actually quite pleased to get the temp gun. While I laughed along with everyone else, I was secretly thrilled to be getting this thing because I had been planning to purchase one. With winter coming, I wanted to go about finding the places in my home that were allowing cold air in and the HVAC treated air to leak out. After some research online, the best way was to get a temp gun and scour the exterior of my home to find the leaks. Once it got cool enough to have the furnace on, I went outside with my new, trusty temperature gun. Right away, I was stunned to see all the areas on the exterior of my home that were pouring out HVAC treated air. I could hardly believe it but, I marked each and every spot. It took about a month of my spare time to seal up all those spots. However, it was well worth it. The HVAC monthly utility bill was nearly 20 percent less than the previous year!
