I constantly run our gas furnace for a day straight whenever the weather gets freezing again

I have a series of home repair plans every Fall as the weather starts to drop plus transition into winter.

First of all, I enjoy to use plastic film to insulate our leaky windows from freezing drafts.

It’s cheap, looks enjoy thick plastic wrap, plus it is easy to install plus remove. Some people might scoff if they haven’t tried window film, however it certainly makes a sizable difference in regions as freezing as mine. I also enjoy to get a cord or several of wood chopped ahead of the first snowfall. Luckily, I have ample room for chopped wood in our barn where I keep our horses, tools, plus building materials. I have a wood stove in our bedroom that is an amazing source of radiant heat in the extreme Wintertide weather here. But, despite how good our wood stove is, I still supplement it with our electric gas furnace. As several people know, an electric gas furnace can have a funky odor when it’s first used again after being shut down for six or several weeks. It’s pressing to let the gas furnace run for a day or several just to burn off the dust plus microbial growth that settled on the heat exchanger while it was turned off. Thankfully, our gas furnace only needs a day of burn off before the odor finally goes away. My parents have an older gas furnace plus theirs takes several to more than two times as long to burn off the funky odors from being shut off for so long. It’s a aggravating reality to deal with if you rely on indoor heat yearly through the freezing season, however at least in our case, it’s only a temporary inconvenience. Compared to all of the wood chopping plus weatherproofing I do around the house, putting the gas furnace through a burn off cycle is actually the easiest thing of all.
