I have lived in my house for a few years now, and there have always been small problems with the property that I’ve worked hard to sort out.
Every time it seems like one issue is resolved, another one quickly emerges.
For instance, there were wiring issues when I first moved in that made the lighting extremely unreliable and caused dangerous electrical shortages. Then there was a cockroach infestation problem. Finally, we had a family of rodents move into the attic at some point. After this I noticed that my HVAC unit was underperforming compared to its old rate of efficiency. When the furnace and AC didn’t seem to be pumping out enough tempered air to fill the house, I kept trying to insulate my house better, thinking that there was hot and cold air escaping from the building. None of these efforts made any difference in the overall air quality, and I found myself finally making a phone call to the local HVAC repair shop in town. A polite heating and cooling specialist was at my house sooner than expected, and he immediately cleared my furnace and air conditioner from any blame in this continued air quality problem. After poking around for quite a while in the attic, he finally came back down and had an answer for me. That family of raccoons had torn about a thousand holes in my ductwork when they resided in my attic! No wonder I wasn’t getting any properly tempered air from the air conditioner and heater; it was all escaping into the walls and attic of my old house!
