I’m one of those people who perseveres as long as they can, even when it’s pretty clear that it’s time to throw in the towel.
This is especially true when it comes to financial issues.
I will go months wearing a pair of broken shoes with holes in the soles just to avoid spending money on a new pair. I’ve also driven cars well past the point of being safe in order to save myself the stress of shopping for a new vehicle. This same situation happened last year with my failing HVAC system; I just couldn’t let the old piece of equipment go without a long and drawn out fight. For months I was having systematic failures in which my thermostat simply wasn’t producing the desired temperatures that I set. One day the heater would fail and I would spend a few hundred dollars having it patched back up by a heating specialist, only for my AC to fail a few weeks later. I would call out the cooling specialist and they would manage to fix up the old air conditioning unit for a matter of time, only for the old thermostat to stop responding. I would have an electrician come out with the heating and cooling guys and rewire the temperature control unit, only for the heater to fail once more. And so on, and so on it went. After thousands of dollars wasted on making minor repairs to the problem ridden HVAC system it became clear that I needed to bite the bullet and start anew.
