Maybe then they will know what it was like
I remember that when I was growing up, the thing that kept me from getting too hot was a wood-burning fireplace. Now that I’m looking at the new Heating + A/C technology, using a wood-burning fireplace to keep myself comfortable seems like a long time ago. When I tell my kids that this is how I kept myself warm in the winter, they look at me like I’ve grown two heads. I know you could say this is because they have so many options for new Heating and Air Conditioning technology. They’ve always had air conditioning in their rooms, and each of them also has a space heater. They have no idea what it’s like to have to rely on a wood-burning fireplace for heat and a fan for cooling. So every now and then, when they are complaining about how terrible it is that the air conditioner is broken and they don’t know how they are going to make it, I tell them about how I grew up, and they quickly change their tune as they realize how lucky they are. One of these mornings, if they keep complaining about the heating and cooling system, I might just take them to their grandparents’ house for a while. My parents have a very old heating and cooling system, and it’s pretty much the same as it was back in the day. Maybe then they will know what it was like. It’s amazing to see how technology has changed over the years and made our lives so much easier and more comfortable. It’s important to appreciate how far we’ve come while also remembering how much simpler life used to be.
