I still can’t believe that I legitimately made the jump to working on my own.
That’s something that I had hoped would happen but then an adult life happened.
I know I’m not the only one to get stuck in a task once there is a family and a house with central a/c to take care of. It’s straight-forward to know about being your own boss when you’re young and just out of the radiant heating of a dorm room. That was the way it went for me. I came out of school having a supercharged passion for working in my field. Unfortunately, starting out on one’s own in this industry is pretty hard to do. So like many before me, I took a job inside the commercial heating and air conditioning of an office to hone my skills and get experience. There’s particularly no other way around it. But for me, I know I sort of lucked out because I didn’t hate my job and the office was a good place to work. I liked my colleagues and I enjoyed the zone controlled heating and air conditioning of the office. Next thing I know, I’m married with teenagers and a mortgage. Suddenly, I felt a bit handcuffed to the office. So I have to sort of supply credit to the pandemic for snapping that tie to the office. I realized while I was working at home that I particularly was ready to do this myself. So once we were invited back to the zone controlled heating and air conditioning of the office, I chose to stay at home. I had a ductless heat pump installed in the space that is now my house office and went to work consulting.
