The heat pump is something that I so took for granted for much of my life.
Even when I first became a home owner, I wasn’t aware of how truly awesome that piece of HVAC equipment actually is.
But all that changed when I hung out with the HVAC tech during a seasonal heating and cooling maintenance appointment. It was my day off and this HVAC tech and I had shared a brew a few time before at the local pub. So, I asked him if I could just sort of watch what all went into an air conditioning tune-up. I assured him I wouldn’t get in the way and if I was pestering him, he could just tell me. This guy is the coolest and was happy to have me along. And that was the day that I fully understood just how versatile and amazing the heat pump actually is. First of all, I had no idea that when you moved the thermostat from cooling to heating, the heat pump simply reverses the refrigerant. It’s able to then extract heat energy from the outside air and use it to heat the house. My mind was blown. And when the heat pump is cooling the house, it’s also balancing the humidity levels inside. It does this as a byproduct of removing indoor heat energy and exhausting it outside. During the process, a whole lot of moisture in the air gets exhausted as well. And that lowers the humidity which in turn mitigates mold & mildew growth. It really is an amazing piece of HVAC equipment. And that afternoon taught me to never take heat pumps and heating and cooling for granted ever again.
