Types of air purifiers and MERV ratings

What is a MERV rating? That is the rating on how efficient an air filter is at catching dust.

I am an expert at MERV ratings since I suffer from really bad allergies. I decided that I wasn’t going to be sneezing, coughing and blowing my nose inside anymore. I was going to do something about my air quality for once. I looked at air purification systems that install in either the return or supply ducts. Those air cleaners work so much better, but they are really expensive. For example, the IQAir Perfect 16 uses HEPA filters, which are the best of the best in terms of MERV ratings. The initial cost of the system lies between 2500-3500. Then you need to factor in air filter changes with the air purifier. The air purifier’s filters were around 400 bucks. The air filter needs to be changed monthly. So I was looking at over eight grand to own an air purifier and keep it running good. The Amaircare 10,000 offers stage three air filtration which means it is a beast at cleaning. It can handle dust, smells, fumes and other gases elements. It is really meant for way harder stuff than I was asking for. The cost of it is around 4 grand and then the air filter is changed every three months. It is still super expensive though. Right now I have a high MERV rated air filter in my actual HVAC equipment. I then get regular maintenance and service on my machine. I also have a cheap, portable air purifier that stays in my bedroom at night or the living room during the day.
