I was surprised to see an ad in the newspaper for an HvAC company. It appeared that the company was holding a brand new campaign for HVAC techs. Their ad read that they were looking for a few good women for their company. I thought it was a misprint and I couldn’t keep from calling about the ad. When I was eighteen I had taken the HvAC certification course. I passed the course and I graduated at the top of my class. After I got my certification, I had a really difficult time trying to find a job. It seemed that no one really wanted to hire a 5’1” petite blonde to do work on furnaces and air conditioning. I grew up with six brothers and I was the baby. If I wanted to do anything fun, I had to do it with my brothers. I had no problem getting dirty since we used to play football in the mud. Older men couldn’t understand this and most of them thought there was something wrong that I was an HvAC technician. When the phone was answered I told the woman that I was calling about the ad in the newspaper. I was given a date and time for an interview and I was told to bring my certification and school transcripts. I couldn’t believe it was that easy. When I arrived at the HVAC company, things suddenly got very clear. Everyone who was working there, were women. The company was trying to hire nothing but women so they had good jobs without getting harassed.
