What is the significance of the Reverse Osmosis GPD Rating?

Many people don’t understand the Gallons Per Day (GPD) rating of reverse osmosis (RO) water filters.  They don’t realize that the GPD value is based on a 24 hour period.  So if you empty your RO storage tank in the morning at breakfast and expect any more than a couple of  gallons of filtered water an hour later, you are going to be disappointed.

Also that GPD rating of your RO filter is based on a minimum amount of water pressure (at least 35 PSI)

Crystal Quest water filters offers several of their RO models with pressure pumps to maintain the designed pressure when the incoming pressure is less than required

When is a whole house water filter appropriate?

If you can afford it, a whole house water filter may be your best choice. This may be particularly true if you have no other water filters at all and can solve all your water issues with a single filter.

In the case of well water with a sulfur smell, for example, no matter what you use as a downstream filter you are not going to get rid of that smell at your kitchen faucet (except for a reverse osmosis filter) or your shower head. The best cure for this condition is a whole house water filter that back flushes with potassium permanganate. It is messy stuff to handle but does a superb job.

How many water filters are enough?

If you are buying your first water filter you should evaluate your total water filter needs. then establish priorities based on your available financial resources.

A faucet water filter or pitcher water filter are your least expensive options for filtering drinking water. A number of other options are available for both undersink and countertop water filters the most comprehensive being a reverse osmosis water filter. They do a superb job of filtering your drinking water. If conditions permit you can tee off from undersink filters and filter the water going to your refrigerator.

Now lets move to the bathroom. Do you need a shower filter to prevent chlorine and fluoride from entering your body?

How about a whole house filter and/or water softener? These are obviously more expensive but may make some of the downstream filters you were considering unnecessary.

And finally don’t overlook the possibility of needing an ultraviolet water sterilizer to remove dangerous bacteria.
