Whenever hurricanes roll through my village on an official basis every year, I’m not in all that much danger, but I am in danger of annoyance.
Let me explain, and my house is sturdily built, so I don’t have to worry all that much about damaging winds or debris! I’m also far enough inland to avoid storm surge, no, the main concern with hurricanes around here is that we end up losing power.
This is not nice for me in particular for 2 reasons, one, I work from and I rely on a stable internet connection in order to do that work. Two, I appreciate temperature control! Last hurricane season, a single storm in particular rolled in plus cost me more than three days of work and comfort due to lack of power. Of course, this storm had to hit in the middle of June, during a heatwave. I was unable to make money and I was soaked with sweat without the benefit of my rare air conditioner. I also wasn’t able to get all that much rest because of how warm I was. I certainly couldn’t rely on fans! I began to wonder if there was such a thing as a wireless, portable cooling system component as I sat in my dark plus swelteringly tepid house. I used my cell phone’s mobile data, my one respite from the boredom of being stuck at home with no power, to check and see if such a thing existed, plus to my astonishment, they do! You might say, why not just get a generator so that you can have power in your whole house? I say a portable battery-operated cooling system would be far less expensive and temperature control is all I actually care about in these circumstances!
