Couples fitness class doesn’t go well

About eight months ago, my boyfriend Allen and I signed up for a couples fitness class.

We’d booked a trip to Hawaii and planned to complete several especially gruelling hikes. Wanting to get the most out of our vacation, we decided it best to get in shape beforehand. During the week prior to our first training session, I started going for light jogs around the neighborhood every night. I made sure to stretch and work on my flexibility, and even made some changes to my diet. I encouraged Allen to join in my efforts to prepare, but he was always too busy. The first couples training session was extremely strenuous. The instructor was really nice, friendly and knowledgeable, but he always pushed us really hard. He didn’t allow anyone to give less than one hundred percent effort the entire class. By the end of it, we were all red-faced, sweaty and exhausted. While I was a bit sore the following day, Allen had difficulty getting out of bed. When it was time to head to the second session, Allen said he couldn’t make it because of a meeting for work. I knew he was just making an excuse not to attend the class. After that, I started attending the couples fitness classes by myself. It is a bit awkward at times, because we do a lot of partner exercises. Fortunately, the instructor has been willing to step in and partner up with me. I am no longer looking forward to my trip to Hawaii with Allen. He’s in terrible physical shape, and won’t be able to complete the hikes that we’ve already paid for. I refuse to sit at the hotel because he’s tired or sore.
